An evaluation of student participation in credit-earning experiential learning show that students in CHS have fewer opportunities to explore career pathways through internships and other work-based learning experiences.
Only 2% of VCU students in the College of Humanities & Sciences engage in internship courses (2019).
Students in CHS disciplines are less likely than their peers in applied or experiential learning experiences to graduate with set career plans.
At VCU, only students who can financially afford to partake in low-paying or unpaid internships reap benefits and gain access. However, most students are left with deciding between the pursuit of an unpaid internship that provides new skills or a part-time job in an unrelated field of interest that provides financial resources.
